Plane Crashes in Brazil

July 18, 2007 -

Flight JJ3054 crashed into a building when attempting to land in the Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport.

What Went Wrong?

Although the crash is still under investigation, reports show the pilot of TAM airlines was attempting to land during a rainstorm and careened across a highway before crashing into a concrete building and bursting into flames.

Investigators believe the pilot overshot the runway and tried to take off again before the accident occurred.

Unsafe Airport

The safety of Brazilian airports has been put into question since the crash, which occurred earlier this week.

According to pilot Miles O'Brien, the airport at Sao Paulo is notorious for being risky, with its short and oftentimes slippery runways.

The runways were recently resurfaced to take car of this problem, but the cutting of grooves to drain rainwater has yet to be done.

“It's like you are literally flying past people's apartments. Then you land on the runway. It is completely surrounded by the central party of Sao Paulo city. This is not an airport at the edge of a city, it is directly in the city,” explains Tom Hennigan, a reported from Sao Paulo.

Fatal Accident

Although not all of the bodies in the crash have been identified or found yet, authorities believe that at least 200 people were killed in the crash, making it the largest crash in Brazil's history.
